Assalamu Alaikum!
I have been having a great time teaching this grade 12 course so far this semester. As it is about Families in Canada, we have been learning about each other as well as our families and our family backgrounds.
We have made creative family trees, regularly hold community circles to discuss our daily and familial experiences and even performed skits about the changing family throughout history. We held an exciting Family Fair right after the Family Day Holiday and will be conducting similar endeavours in the near future, but on a larger scale, Insha’Allah, involving food and ‘breaking bread’ and all those special items that help to keep families bonded! We have been learning about research methods and types, have started researching about issues affecting individuals and families, and have been viewing media that depicts the family in various lights. This initial research project is a lead-in for the culminating research activity for the course.
In addition, we will be complementing the course material with a couple of field trips, the first to the Metro Toronto Reference Library, in order to assist with our study of research techniques and methodologies. The other trip is to Black Creek Pioneer Village in order to see and compare the contemporary family with the family in history.
As we have many amazing examples of families and figures who have emerged from our very own rich Islamic history, we like to share and compare their stories with those of our contemporaries. Every day is filled with new lessons about the changing family. Please refer to our course outline given at the beginning of the semester for more information and look forward to some more tidbits from Room # 108!
Jazak’Allah Khayr!
